What if a directee can’t visualise? How does that shape prayer and discernment?
Many spiritual practices - particularly imaginative ones - assume an ability to visualise. But what about those who cannot form mental images (aphantasia), or those whose imaginations are vividly overwhelming (hyperphantasia)? This workshop explores how neurological diversity impacts prayer, reflection, and the experience of God's presence. As Spiritual Directors, how can we support directees with different imaginative capacities?
We’ll explore practical ways to adapt traditional practices, honour diverse minds, and accompany people who pray without pictures. You’ll leave with language and tools to affirm a wider range of spiritual imaginations. This workshop will consider how best to support directees who struggle with mental imagery - and invites us to celebrate the rich diversity of human experience.
