Holding Space Together: An Introduction to Circles of Trust

Exploring the Interface Between Group Soul Work and Spiritual Direction

“Our deepest calling is to grow into our own authentic self-hood, whether or not it conforms to some image of who we ought to be. As we do so, we will not only find the joy that every human being seeks – we will also find our path of authentic service in the world.”  -   Parker J. Palmer, creator of the Circles of Trust model.

This experiential workshop introduces participants to the Circles of Trust framework, a model developed by Parker Palmer and the Center for Courage & Renewal. Grounded in Quaker principles and contemplative wisdom, Circles of Trust provides a structure for creating safe, confidential, and sacred space where individuals can listen deeply to their inner teacher, hold space for one another without fixing or advising, and encounter “solitude in community”.

The first part of the session will be a guided “taster” of the Circles of Trust experience, offering you a chance to slow down and reconnect with your own inner wisdom in the company of others. In the second part, we will explore the intersection between Circles of Trust and the practice of Spiritual Direction, especially for Directors who work with groups or feel called to facilitate communal discernment. We’ll consider how this framework can help Spiritual Directors hold group space that is hospitable, transformative, and rooted in God’s presence.

It will especially resonate with Directors discerning a call to group work or curious about the cross-pollination of contemplative practices that support deep listening, courageous presence, and communal soul work.
