Forming the Practice
A formative course for spiritual directors called to supervise others.
As spiritual directors, we know the value of having a trusted space in which to reflect on our practice, notice what may be happening beneath the surface, and listen for the presence and movement of God. But becoming a supervisor requires more than learning a set of skills or models. It is an invitation into a distinctive vocation of presence, discernment and accountability.
Supervision: Forming the Practice is a year-long formative course for experienced spiritual directors who feel called to accompany and support the practice of others.
Grounded in the contemplative tradition that lies at the heart of spiritual direction, this course will help you develop both the inner disposition and practical confidence needed to become an effective supervisor. You will explore what it means to hold a contemplative supervisory space; to attend to the multiple relationships present in supervision; to hold the responsibilities of the relationship with humility and clarity; and to recognise the movements of power, vulnerability and discernment within the supervisory encounter.
This is a course for experienced spiritual directors who are ready to take the next step: helping to nurture the safety, wisdom and sustainability of spiritual direction through the supervision of others.

Key Information

Pre-recorded teaching to introduce key themes, which you can access at your own pace and refer back to throughout the course;
Six live online sessions designed around putting learning into practice — experimenting with supervisory skills, receiving feedback and learning alongside experienced tutors and peers.
Peer reflection - meeting regularly with fellow students in peer trios to reflect on your practice and bring your learning into conversation with your own interior life and emerging sense of vocation.
Sustained practice - after the second live session you will be asked to find 2-3 individual spiritual directors to supervise for the rest of the year.

Alongside practical experience, you will engage deeply with two significant frameworks for supervision — the Five Elements of Supervision and the Seven-Eyed Supervisor — while exploring areas including group dynamics, power and authority, challenge and feedback, ethics and safeguarding, discernment and the contemplative foundations of supervision.

We expect you to be able to attend all six live sessions, as they form the core of the course practice;
You commit to watching all the pre-recorded content (around 30-60 minutes of content for each module) and completing any related activities, e.g. completing a self-reflection handout related to the theme;
You will meet with a trio of students for one hour each month to reflect together in your learning and growth (to be scheduled together at your convenience);
From March, you are asked to begin supervising 2-3 individual spiritual directors regularly for the remainder of the year - you are responsible for setting these up but we will support you in how to do so;
Students will be asked to submit an assignment at the end of October, reflecting on their supervision experience and practice, and incorporating their learning and their own inner reflection and growth.
In addition, we ask that you read one book over the course of the year (from a choice of three recommendations) on the topic of supervision.

Students should be able to demonstrate:
Solid experience of spiritual accompaniment, ideally with a minimum of three years, with at least three directees;
Trained in spiritual direction on a recognised training programme;
In regular spiritual direction and supervision themselves;
Participation in Safeguarding Training within the past three years;
Able to provide one reference from either their own supervisor or a member of their peer supervision group;
Evidence of ongoing learning and development;
Commitment and capacity for the course requirements.
