How can we accompany others as their images of God evolve, expand, or come into question?
Those we accompany in spiritual direction come with myriad images of God—images gifted to them, images imposed upon them, images that bring deep comfort, and images that create tension or struggle. God is rock, shepherd, father, mother, spirit, source-of-all-being—and sometimes God is “I don’t know.” In direction, we are invited to hold these shifting divine imaginings with reverence, compassion, and curiosity.
This workshop will explore how spiritual directors can both welcome and gently interrogate these evolving images of God. Together we will consider tools for uncovering layers of imagery, how to discern which images lead toward wholeness, and how to hold the tensions that arise when faith shifts. We’ll reflect on the challenges of accompanying those whose old images of God no longer serve them, and we’ll listen to how marginalised voices can broaden and enrich our own understanding of the Divine.
