Body & Breath

As Spiritual Directors, we desire to prayerfully listen and respond to the Holy throughout all of our human experience with our whole body, mind and spirit. Somatics and body awareness help inform and deepen our experience of personal prayer and our practice of spiritual direction. We are embodied beings, and as John O’Donohue wisely wrote, “Our bodies are a sacred threshold.” All of what we experience in life comes to us, filtered, colored or shaped in some way through our bodies, including the way we approach prayer. Sometimes, we may feel disconnected or perhaps even distrusting of our bodies as we pray. By intentionally partnering with our breath and becoming more aware of our body, new ways of listening, discerning and responding to God open up to us. “We are stewards of the Spirit within us, responsible for and responsible to our bodies… if we are to continue in long-term ministry we need to familiarize ourselves with our personal pattern of bodily reactions…”(Sue Pickering) and how those reactions inform and impact our way of living.

Join Hope Stockman for three 60 minute sessions to experience integrating the body into your own prayer and accompaniment. During these sessions, we will explore somatics in spiritual direction and be invited to engage in a guided breath and body prayer practice. Follow-up resources will be provided.

You may attend one, two, or all three sessions!
