How to Write a Great LCSD Directory Profile

Your Directory profile is often the first encounter someone has with you as a Spiritual Director. A good profile helps potential directees get a sense of who you are, what you offer, and whether you might be the right companion for their spiritual journey.

Many people browsing the Directory may be new to Spiritual Direction, so a clear and warm profile can make the whole experience feel more welcoming and accessible.

Here’s a simple guide to creating a profile that is both professional and personal.

1. Start with the Basics

The first part of your profile is made up of the essential facts. Make sure these are complete and accurate:

  • Your faith tradition – this helps seekers understand your context

  • Your general location – town/city or area

  • Your meeting options – in person, online, phone, or flexible

  • Your interests/specialisms – e.g., discernment, grief, Ignatian spirituality, transitions, creativity

  • Your pricing, if applicable

  • Any practical details that help people know what to expect

  • Where you trained - this helps people training and looking for someone who trained with the same organisation.

These elements help people filter their search and quickly see whether you might be a good fit.

2. Write a Compelling Description (50–100 words)

Your description is the heart of your profile. This is where people get a sense of you - your voice, your approach, and what it might be like to sit with you. It is also searchable and so any information not covered in the interest/specialism can be talked about here.

Tips for writing your short biography:

  • Aim for 50–100 words

  • Write in first person (“I offer…”, “I have trained in…”)

  • Mention any relevant experience, roles, or areas of focus

  • Share why you love being a Spiritual Director - your passion or motivation

  • If you feel comfortable, include a human detail such as a hobby or an interest

    • This helps seekers get a sense of your personality

Think about questions like:

  • What are you passionate or curious about?

  • Is there an area of theology, spiritual tradition, or experience that shapes your approach?

  • Are there particular groups you especially enjoy accompanying—certain ages, life stages, or roles?

  • Do you feel called to walk with those experiencing grief, faith shifts, discernment, burnout, vocation, creativity?

Summary:
Tell readers who you are, what you do, and offer a glimpse of what it’s like to work with you.

Profiles like this help seekers understand that Spiritual Direction is for them even if they aren’t sure yet.

3. Give a Sense of What It’s Like to Meet With You

A profile isn’t just a list of details - it’s an invitation.

Consider adding a sentence that helps people imagine the experience of sitting with you. For example:

  • “I offer a gentle, spacious approach that helps people listen for God in the midst of everyday life.”

  • “I work especially with those navigating transition or uncertainty, holding space for honesty and hope.”

  • “I enjoy accompanying people who are curious about contemplative prayer and embodiment.”

This helps seekers feel seen and supported even before they make contact.

4. Remember: You’re Writing for Real People

Many people browsing the Directory may be unsure whether Spiritual Direction is for them. A warm, clear, and approachable profile can give them the confidence to reach out.

Your profile doesn’t need to be perfect - just authentic, thoughtful, and true to who you are.

5. Choose a Good Photo

A photo helps people feel more at ease, especially those who are nervous about reaching out.

Photo tips:

  • Use a head-and-shoulders photo so your face is clearly visible

  • Wear something you would normally wear when meeting directees

  • Choose natural, thoughtful lighting

  • Colour or black and white are both fine - use what feels like you

Your photo doesn’t need to be overly formal - just warm, clear, and representative.
