When you hear the word ‘God’ what’s the first thing that comes to mind? For us, it’s ‘play’ or, to use a descriptor employed by ancient theologians: ‘dance’.
Play is sacred. When we are at play we are curious, open and fully present - ripe for encounter with the Divine Presence. Embracing our playfulness and embracing our spirituality compose entwined invitations on life’s path.
In the spiritual direction space, the qualities of playfulness are a gift to both director and directee. For the director, play offers a balm to any anxious or perfectionistic tendencies and reveals fresh pathways into exploring our directee’s stories, questions and struggles. For the directee, play offers permission, freedom and space to be, as they shed shoulds and musts and come home to the gift of being themselves.
During this workshop we will explore our attraction and resistance to play, be curious about spiritual direction as a playful soul space and explore how we might cooperate with the energy of play in our own spiritual direction practice. Through discussion, guided practice and open-ended playful exploration we will journey into the heart of play and gain practical ideas for how we can playfully accompany our directees.

Troy Cady is a spiritual director and he is the founder and president of PlayFull, a ministry whose mission is to help people and organisations “play from the inside out.” PlayFull offers a variety of programs, services, and resources that tap into the spirit of playfulness to promote personal, relational, and organisational vitality. PlayFull also nurtures a network of faith communities in Chicago and other parts of the United States that provide an alternative to people who would otherwise be reluctant to go to church.
