ENRICHING OUR LISTENING: Theology in Spiritual Direction

with Sr Gemma Simmonds

Many people shy away from the notion of the theology embedded within Spiritual Direction, seeing it as a dry and sterile attempt to turn this most practical of skills into an intellectual abstraction. While Ignatius warns that it is not so much knowledge as inner feeling and relish that satisfies the soul, a look at the theological underpinnings of the art of direction helps to open it out more richly for guides as well as for pilgrims.
