Enfolded in Christ

Posted on April 23rd, 2018 in News

Having directed clergy for many years and coming to realise that their role can often overwhelm their life in Christ, I decided to write a book about ‘being beneath the role’ – and, thankfully, Canterbury Press were very supportive! So, on 30 May, ENFOLDED IN CHRIST: The Inner Life of a Priest will appear in the bookshops.

As the publisher writes: ‘It’s a book about priesthood with a difference. Instead of focusing on ministry it helps priests develop a healthy spiritual life to nurture their vocation.’

Inspired by some words of the famous French priest, St John Vianney. ‘the priesthood is the love of the heart of Jesus’, it’s aimed at priests and ministers but was written with spiritual directors in mind - there’s even a section on the subject.

I drew on different spiritualties including Benedictine, Franciscan and Ignatian as well as my life as a Franciscan friar and parish priest and my experience as a pastoral supervisor.

The book focuses on what will nurture awareness of Christ, sustain holy living and foster personal well-being. Chapters concern a range of topics including:

  • Being rooted on God’s love for us
  • Realising the need for constant ‘conversion of the heart’ and confession
  • Issues concerning formation and formators
  • Prayer beyond the beginnings
  • Eucharistic living
  • Looking at ‘being beneath the role’
  • Spiritual direction and supervision
  • Issues of sexuality, celibacy and the single life
  • Letting go.

The Bishop of Southwark kindly wrote a Foreword in which he says: “There is much food for the journey in this valuable book: much to ponder on, and much to take hold of. I commend it wholeheartedly,”

ISBN-13: 9781786220462, RRP £12.99 (US$21) Available from Canterbury Press.
